Exhibition extended until September!

Have you, or do you know anyone, who was a part of the Workers Education Association (WEA)? Did you, or someone you know, attend a workers’ class with people like Professor A.T. D’Eye, John Thirkell, Jack Dunn, Arthur Clay, Malcolm Pitt, Peter Sheppard or Terry Harrison? Professor Emeritus (Canterbury Christ Church University) Linden West PhD FRSA, is curating an exhibition – derived from oral history interviews – in collaboration with the Kent Mining Museum on the theme of workers education and militancy amongst Kent miners. The exhibition explores the role and meaning of workers education in a range of lives and examines the influences of tutors such as A. T. D’Eye (Secretary to the Red Dean of Canterbury Cathedral, Hewlett Johnson) and John Thirkell employed by Oxford University Delegacy for Extramural Studies and the WEA. Within the exhibition, we explore the lives of various worker-students like Jack Dunn, Arthur Clay, Terry Harrison, Phil Sutcliffe. Attention is also paid to the role of women, not least how later strikes – especially 1984/5 (in its 40th Centenary year) – led to profound ‘lifewide learning’ changes among women in the Coalfield.
